Blue Monday: How to Stay Happy on the Gloomiest Day of the Year

What makes you happy? A happiness survey conducted by Young’s Pubs shows that us Brits love nothing more than the simple things in life.

The poll, which was commissioned by Young’s Pubs and surveyed 1,000 people, revealed that us Brits enjoy creating a cosy atmosphere at home and enjoy the small things with those who mean the most to us – an adaptation of the Danish trend of hygge.

It’s official that the majority of us enjoy time spent in our PJs, wrapped up warm with our favourite TV show or a riveting book. Our favourite places besides our own homes include our local pubs and our favourite restaurants.

The research also lists our top three moments guaranteed to cheer us up as going on holiday, finding £10 in an old pair of jeans and crawling into bed with fresh sheets. It was also revealed that rude, ungrateful or grumpy people are most likely to bring us down.

Based on this research, the top ideas to ensure your happiness this Blue Monday include:

Indulge on your favourite food

Young’s Pubs research revealed that a roast dinner with all the trimmings, traditional fish and chips and chocolate are the top three foods most likely to put a smile on our faces. Whatever your favourite food happens to be, treat yourself today of all days to ensure you keep smiling!

Blast the happy music, get lost in a good book or simply stick the telly on

Keep yourself busy and create distractions from daily life with a good book, your favourite show or an uplifting sing and dance to your favourite tune. These small, simple things are likely to give you a quick pick-me-up.

Treat yourself to quality time with friends at your local

Spending some time with friends and family always helps to improve our mood. Gather those close to you and head to your favourite restaurant for a gourmet meal, or even better, head to your local Young’s Pub for a couple of pints or a few glasses of wine. Replicating that cosy, comfortable feeling of your own home, accompanied by good friends and a hard-earned drink is likely to turn the table on Blue Monday and get you set for a good week.
